Kids for Peace Foundation
We are in the process of establishing a 501(c)(3) Foundation to support the future goals of Kids for Peace beyond the traditional summer camp. Below we have listed our four preliminary goals for the Foundation and invite suggestions and comment from camp families and friends. This is a grass roots effort which will require energy and vision from our camp community to raise friends and funds for our mission.

The mission of the Kids for Peace Foundation is to transform young people’s lives through global education – by empowering them with geographic and cultural knowledge, a sensitivity to issues of peace and justice challenging children throughout the world each day, and cultivating awareness of opportunities to explore the world beyond their own reality.
We endeavor to build a vibrant community of young global citizens from all walks of lives by igniting their appreciation for world cultures and equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and compassion to intelligently speak about world issues.  The Kids for Peace Foundation will actively involve participants in service projects with a humanitarian mission and prepare them to be advocates for the causes which concern them.
The four major objectives of the Kids for Peace Foundation are as follows:

  1. Advancement of the Kids for Peace Academy, a three-week residential summer camp in the Baltimore area for American children from across the country to expand their geographic knowledge, learn about world issues, develop diplomatic skills, improve written and oral communication skills and explore educational and career opportunities in the world arena.
  2. Expand the Peacemaker Leadership Development program, offering monthly events focused on critical world issues to teens throughout the Baltimore-Washington area.
  3. Establish and fund a Kids for Peace Camp site in a needy community in Baltimore city.
  4. Provide educational scholarships for area youth wishing to participate in youth exchange or internationally focused community service projects.

Objective #1:
Kids for Peace Academy

A three-week residential summer camp in the Baltimore area for American children from across the country to expand their geographic knowledge, learn about world issues, develop diplomatic skills, improve their written and oral communication, and explore educational and career opportunities in the world arena.

Who Will We Serve?  Kids for Peace Academy will bring young men and women, ages 14-18, from across the United States to the Baltimore area each summer. Great care will be taken to recruit participants who reflect the ethnic, religious and economic diversity of our nation.

Who Will Serve Them? We aspire to recruit experts and professionals (“specialists in-residence”) from across the country with the ability to share their professions in an inspiring way. It is our hope that organizations will sponsor specialists in-residence and provide curriculum and materials for hosted campers.

Objective #2
Peacemaker Youth Leadership Development Program

Peacemakers is a leadership development program for middle and high school students. The Peacemaker program seeks to prepare young men and women for more active and effective participation in the global arena.  To this end, monthly events, trips and seminars are planned throughout the academic year to give Peacemakers the opportunity to develop their talents and awareness in the area of peace studies and global awareness.  Past programming has included involvement in the Teach Africa Day at the State Department, Peacemaking seminars at American University, interaction with the Latino community in Baltimore, planning and organization of a Teen Summit on Darfur and various other activities.

During the camp season, Peacemakers will share issues of peace and justice affecting the countries being featured through our Kids for Peace in Action series.  It is our hope that Peacemaker Youth Leaders will stimulate our camp community to take an interest in on or more of these issues and find a way to become involved in a more meaningful way.

Objective #3: Kids for Peace
Baltimore City

At Kids for Peace, we believe every child, armed with knowledge, understanding and compassion, can make a difference in the world!  There is a particular need to empower lower-income children with geographic literacy and an understanding of issues of peace and justice that effect children throughout the world.  Particular emphasis will be put on:

·        Selecting participants from a variety of racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds to reflect the diversity of the city itself.

·        Providing on-going academic-year programming to continue their intercultural skills.

·        Exposing these children to career possibilities related to geography, diplomacy, international business and humanitarian aid.

Objective #4:
Scholarships for International Youth Exchange

There is no way to navigate through life in the United States today without encountering people of other cultures. At Kids for Peace, we believe every young person should have a passport and the opportunity to leave their known world and experience the world outside of the United States.  For young people of many countries, a year abroad is an expected rite of passage. At Kids for Peace, we believe an experience abroad during the teenage years will spark a life focused beyond the self and oriented to participation in the international arena.  Therefore, Kids for Peace will:

·        Forge partnerships with existing intercultural exchange programs

·        Seek funding for scholarships for needy students wishing to live and study abroad

·        Inform Kids for Peace participants about university degree programs and study opportunities in peace studies, global issues and diplomacy.
